Kakenya, a girl who demanded school not child marriage
Kakenya Ntaiya made a deal with her father: she would undergo the traditional Maasai rite of passage of female cutting if he would delay her marriage and let her go to high school.
In this TEDx Mid Atlantic Talk, Kakenya tells her story of continuing on to college, and of working with her village elders to build a school for girls in her community. It’s a fearless journey that not only changed Kakenya’s destiny but that of 125 other young women.
Kakenya went on to found the Kakenya Center for Excellence, a member of Girls Not Brides.
