Brussels Mughogho of EveryChild Malawi tells MBC of urgent need to address child marriage from Laura Dickinson on Vimeo.
In a live television interview with the Malawi Broadcasting Corporation (MBC), Brussels Mughogho, Country Director of Every Child Malawi, discussed child marriage in Malawi, a country where more than 50% of girls marry as children. He urged the government to take steps to address the practice.
"The current legal position is that a girl can get married at 15 with the parents' consent, and at 16 without the parental consent (...) this is a violation of girls' rights."
"If the government, the civil society organizations, the donors and partners work together, we'll be able to achieve what we want to achieve."
"[Girls] need to be empowered, they need to have skills, decision-making skills, they have to be assertive. We are talking about raising the confidence levels of the girls. In so doing they will be able to make the proper decisions (...) and then they'll be able to break the inter-generational vicious cycle of poverty."
