Successes
Girls Not Brides Uganda is a key partner to the Ugandan government in implementing the National Strategy to End Child Marriages and Teenage Pregnancies. Girls Not Brides Uganda is also working with UNICEF, UNFPA and the Ministry of Gender, Labour and Social Development to carry out a mid-term review of the strategy.
In November 2018, Girls Not Brides Uganda convened its first ever national summit to end child marriage in Uganda. There were over 400 participants, including representatives of girls’ groups, government ministries, religious leaders, CSOs and members of parliament. The summit offered a platform for participants to share best practices, speak out on issues affecting them, discussing policy issues and government efforts to end child marriage. The second National Girl Summit, held in November 2019, focused on reflecting on progress made against the National Strategy and recommendations for the future.
Girls Not Brides Uganda recently ran a national campaign on implementing SDG 5.3 on ending child marriage and has held a number of dialogues to track government commitments towards ending child marriage and teenage pregnancies.
