Dalit was founded in Bangladesh in 1998. The name 'Dalit' is a Bengali word which means oppressed, exploited, neglected and deprived. It was chosen to represent the dalit and indigenous community in Bangladesh. The organisation strives to empower communities and allow them to realise their full potential by creating caste-based free societies that respect people's rights and dignity.
