Webinar: Confined by COVID – Women and girls, HIV and SRHR
ITPC, Making Waves and Salamander Trust webinar: Confined by COVID – Women and girls, HIV and SRHR
January 27 2021, 14:00 PM CET
REGISTRATION: You can register to join the webinar here.
This webinar will focus on the effects of COVID-19 on women living with HIV in East and Southern Africa, women’s responses to it, and what is needed.
Four women who led the research will share findings and recommendations from their report, and there will also be contributions from representatives from the Eastern and Southern Africa Regional UNAIDS Support Team and WHO.
The findings are based on the voice and experience of some 198 women in 28 countries in Eastern and Southern Africa immediately before the lock down in March 2020, and interviews with 30 women in 10 countries between August and October 2020 during or post lock-down.
The findings are also summarised by Joyce Ouma (who led the Kenyan research team) in this 7 minute video which Alice has kindly shared with us. The link to the video on Vimeo is here.
Joyce explains that child marriage, adolescent pregnancies, HIV, HPV (Human papillomavirus) are the sharks; and that whilst they are dangerous they are above the surface and so can attract resources and support. SRHR violations, IPV and other forms of VAWG are the invisible forces beneath the surface that need to be addressed.
