The Society for the Improvement of Rural People (SIRP) was founded in 1988 and registered by the Corporate Affairs Commission, Nigeria in 1999. SIRP is a non-governmental, non-political national organisation committed to working with rural people towards poverty alleviation and their overall empowerment in a sustainable manner through sustained advocacy, training, research, project implementation and provision or credit.
Girls Not Brides member SIRP will be exploring their project focus on the role of civil society in budget advocacy to address child marriage in Nigeria.
The webinar will be presented by Dr. Christopher Ugwu (Executive Director of SIRP), who will explain how civil society worked to institutionalise a gender-responsive budgeting approach for preparing annual budgets in Enugu State and influenced budgetary allocations towards interventions which support adolescent girls and address child marriage in the 2020 Enugu State Budget.
