Webinar: An adolescent girls panellist – re-opening shelter schools
Akili Dada webinar: Re-opening shelter schools
June 10 2020, 2:00 PM BST
Closure of learning institutions including shelter schools due to the COVID-19 pandemic has put girls at risk as they were forced to return home where they potentially face harmful practices. Shelters schools are boarding facilities where girls who are at risk or have been victims of Female Genital Mutilation (FGM), child marriage, and sexual abuse within their communities are taken for refuge. These schools provide girls with safe spaces, shielding them from harm, and providing them with the opportunity to achieve their dreams. Through shelter schools, it is anticipated that girls have access to education, food, medical care, sanitary towels, psycho-social support, clean water, and most importantly safety!
The all adolescent girl panel will discuss in detail the negative implications of closing shelter schools especially now when everyone is grappling with the effects of COVID-19.
